About Coach

Ten bottles, five men’s and five women’s. That is the only perfectly balanced range on this site, and it says something about who the house is aiming at.

Six leatherworkers and a baseball glove

Coach began in 1941 in a Manhattan loft, with six leatherworkers making wallets and small goods by hand. The idea that turned it into a company came from watching a baseball glove: the leather softened with use rather than wearing out, and it got better-looking the more it was handled.

They worked out how to tan hide that way deliberately, and built a business on luggage and bags that improved with age instead of degrading. For most of its life Coach was an American leather company first and a fashion label second — closer to a workshop than a runway.

That history is why the fragrances feel the way they do. Nothing here is trying to be couture. They are approachable, well-made and priced to be bought without much deliberation, which is exactly what the leather goods were.

The men’s five, sorted by weight

  • Coach Open Road — the lightest and the cheapest. Fresh and citrus-led, and the easiest to wear in heat.
  • Coach Green — aromatic and herbal, the most classically masculine thing here.
  • Coach New York — the original men’s fragrance and the reference point, with more spice than the others.
  • Coach Blue — warmer and sweeter, better after dark.
  • Coach Platinum — the most expensive and the most formal, and the one that lasts longest.

Poppy, Dreams and the florals

Coach is the anchor — a modern floral, sheer and easy. Poppy is the loudest and sweetest, and the most expensive bottle on this page. Dreams sits between them. Floral and Floral Blush are the two lightest, and the ones we would point at for a first fragrance or a gift where you do not know the person’s taste well.

Where this page sits

Coach is one of the more useful ranges we carry precisely because it is unambitious. Nothing here will divide a room. If you need something reliable for someone whose taste you do not know — a gift, a first bottle, a scent for work — this is a safer bet than almost anything else on the site, and the packaging carries a name people recognise.

If you want more character at the same price, Kenneth Cole is the closest comparison. If you want a step up in quality, Ralph Lauren covers the same American ground with far more depth. The women’s five are under .
