A skincare brand that writes little essays on its bottles, and makes some of the most convincing gourmand scents in the mass market.
Philosophy launched in 1996 in Arizona with an unusual proposition: skincare and bath products packaged in plain clinical bottles, each carrying a short piece of writing about gratitude, hope or grace. It sold enormously through American television shopping and department stores, and was later bought by Coïg.
The fragrance that made the name is built on clean musk and bergamot with a soft floral middle — the smell of very good soap, essentially, executed better than that description suggests.
It has become one of the most frequently bought wedding fragrances in the United States, for a reason worth understanding: at a wedding, most people want to smell clean and calm rather than seductive, and almost nothing else fills that brief so precisely.
The other half of this house is dessert: birthday cake, sugar cookie, vanilla birthday candles — scented shower gels and lotions that smell startlingly like the real thing. They are layering products rather than fine fragrance, and used that way they are genuinely good.
For clean musks in proper fragrance form, see Calvin Klein; for edible sweetness, Mugler.
