A cognac heir who decided perfume should be sold in a lacquered box you refill rather than a bottle you throw away.
Kilian Hennessy is a descendant of the cognac family. He studied semiotics, wrote a thesis on the language of scent, and worked for several of the big houses before launching By Kilian in 2007 with a clear idea: perfume as a luxury object, sold in a weighted, refillable black lacquer case with a key.
The house was acquired by Estée Lauder in 2016 and has kept its positioning since.
The line’s most famous release takes its name from the fraction of cognac that evaporates through the barrel each year — the distiller’s share given to the angels. The scent follows: oak, cognac, cinnamon, tonka and praline, warm and boozy and unmistakably expensive.
It became one of the most imitated fragrances of the last decade, which is the clearest measure of impact the industry has.
Gourmand, dense and polished — Love, Don’t Be Shy, Black Phantom, Roses on Ice. These are not subtle fragrances, but they are precisely constructed, and the material quality is audible in the dry-down.
