A niche house founded by a Geneva winemaker’s son who decided the rose needed rescuing.
Romano Ricci is the great-grandson of Nina Ricci. He trained in the family trade, then in 2006 started Juliette Has A Gun with a premise that was half joke and half manifesto: the Shakespearean heroine, armed — femininity that is not passive.
The house has stayed small, independent and deliberately provocative in its naming, which is rarer in niche perfumery than the marketing suggests.
Its most discussed release is the one that contains a single ingredient: Cetalox, a synthetic ambergris material, and nothing else. No top notes, no heart, no accord — just one molecule.
Some people find it the purest skin scent ever bottled. Others cannot smell it at all, because sensitivity to ambroxan-type molecules varies enormously between individuals. Both reactions are real, which makes it one of the few fragrances where “I can’t smell anything” is a legitimate result rather than user error.
Lady Vengeance, Mad Madame and Musc Invisible build on roses and musks in various directions — modern, clean-edged, and usually less sweet than their names imply.
For niche houses on our shelves working in the same register, see Byredo and Initio Parfums Privés.
