What oud is, and why it costs what it costs

Oud is not a flower or a spice. It is resin, and it only exists because something went wrong: when an aquilaria tree is infected by a particular mould, it defends itself by flooding the wound with a dark, dense resin. That infected heartwood is oud, sometimes called agarwood.

It happens in a small fraction of wild trees, takes years, and cannot be rushed — which is why genuine oud is among the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, priced by weight against precious metals. Nearly everything at this end of the market, including most of what is on this page, uses reconstructions and blends rather than the wild material. That is not a criticism; the wild resin would put a bottle far beyond this price.

What it smells like is harder to summarise: woody, animalic, slightly medicinal, sweet underneath. It is the backbone of Gulf perfumery in the way that lavender is the backbone of European men’s fragrance, and it behaves completely differently on skin — slower, heavier, closer.

Amber Oud, ten editions

The line is distinguished by colour and material: Black, Gold, Gold Extreme, Bleu, Carbon, Ruby, Rouge, White, Aqua Dubai and Dubai Night.

They are variations rather than separate fragrances, and the pattern is roughly what you would expect: the darker names are heavier and sweeter, the lighter ones fresher and more citrus-led. Aqua Dubai and Dubai Night are Extrait de Parfum, the most concentrated category here.

Two of them — Rouge and Ruby — are listed under unisex rather than men’s, which reflects how the whole line is actually worn. Gulf perfumery has never divided by gender the way European houses do.

How to wear it

This matters more here than on any other page. These are concentrated and they are not designed to be sprayed like an Eau de Toilette. One spray, two at most, and not on clothing you will sit close to someone in. A bottle will last a very long time.

If it is your first time with this style, expect the opening ten minutes to be much stronger than what settles afterwards. Do not judge it in the shop.
